This fall, Cambridge Swinerton Builders (CSB)—AKA The Shiners—pulled off a respectable second-place win in the gumbo category at ABC’s Annual Chili-Gumbo Cook-off. Led by General Superintendent Ronnie Forsythe and Director of Preconstruction Glenn Anderson, this was CSB’s first time competing in the very popular industry-networking event.
Member companies representing general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers from around the metro area participated at Wills Park Equestrian Center for the best chili, gumbo, and theme categories—and the competition was fierce! Each of the 36 entries had to choose between chili or gumbo for their submission and were encouraged to be creative with their theme as well as engage in shameless bribery for votes—which is suggested and allowed!
The team’s gumbo has a story and no one can tell it better than Ronnie. His passion for cooking started in his mother’s restaurant growing up in Kentucky. But when he was 16, on a trip to Cajun country, Ronnie assisted a friend’s mother in preparing the secret family gumbo recipe, and it resulted in him obtaining the handwritten copy. Her one condition was that he never share it with anyone other than family—and Ronnie has honored his promise for 40 years!
During the competition The Shiners stepped-up their presentation efforts by topping-off their gumbo with Cowboy Candy—AKA candied jalapeno peppers—for added spice. Attendees understandably applauded the samplings, returning for seconds. After observing how the game was played, the team is already plotting their strategy next year. The Shiners will not be satisfied until they claim the top spot and bring home the trophy for the gumbo category next year!
