In just their second-ever appearance at the ABC of Georgia's Annual Chili-Gumbo Cookoff, the Swinerton Southeast team captured two major victories! "The Swinerton Shiners" took home first place for "Best Gumbo" and second place for "Best Theme" at the popular industry-networking event.
The Swinerton Shiners finished in second place at last year's competition, so the team was ready to come back for the gold. The team upped the theme by bringing mini mason jars filled with a variety of ice-cold, flavored refreshments, and stepped up their booth, turning their corner of the arena into a genuine moonshine den, complete with a copper still and banjo music. Everyone from Project Executives to Project Engineers were decked out in flannel, overalls, and boots.
The turnout to support the Swinerton Shiners was outstanding! Swinerton invited subcontractors, owners, and architect partners to come out and enjoy the event, so the booth had a crowd surrounding it the entire time. With one of our very own banjo-playing superintendents providing music entertainment, clinking mason jars and banjo tunes became the soundtrack for the night!
Gumbo preparation for the cook-off took 10–12 hours, which required a lot of patience and plenty of cold beer. The gumbo was an absolute hit! Ingredients included homegrown peppers, tomatoes, onions, cayenne peppers, homemade chicken stock, Andouille sausage, crab meat, chicken, and shrimp. During the competition, The Shiners stepped up their presentation efforts by topping-off the gumbo with Cowboy Candy—AKA candied jalapeno peppers—for added spice.
A big thanks to Ronnie Forsythe for being the master Gumbo Guru and carrying the team to victory! The Swinerton Shiners have already begun planning for next year to defend the title!
