Dale Rinehart pinpoints three aspects critical to Sierra Rebar’s small business success: hard work, superior customer service, and an awesome field crew.

“We try every day to be the very best at what we do and to continually improve our performance and customer service,” says Rinehart, the company’s Vice President of Sales and Estimating. “We recognize that our customers have options when it comes to selecting a reinforcing steel company for their project. It’s that competition that drives us to provide competitive pricing and continually outperform our competitors.”

To get to where they are today, Rinehart’s team had to hone in on those priorities.

“We started out a little over seven years ago as a very small company competing for very large projects. We had to convince our customers that we were their best choice and capable of performing and meeting their expectations on large, schedule-driven and complex projects,” he says. “I am proud to now say we’ve had the honor of working on some of the largest and most complex projects in Colorado.”

Q: Where do you seek business advice?

A: We work with some of the largest and most reputable construction companies in the country, and we have built some wonderful relationships with their people. I am always comfortable seeking advice from their knowledgeable and experienced staffs.

Q: How do you market your business?

A: We have been very fortunate to build an excellent reputation in the Colorado construction market. Almost all our business is with repeat customers, and therefore, we do very little marketing. 

Q: How has technology impacted your business?

A: We no longer have to print thousands of drawings/blueprints that we use every single day in our business. We can now download, view and markup the drawings right on our computers. It has also made it so our field crews can access drawings and other documents at the job site on their mobile devices.

Q: Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

A: There are several factors:

  • Competitive pricing.
  • Superior customer service.
  • Our people – so much of our repeat business is due to how well our field crews perform on their projects.
  • Our safety record.
  • Our extensive knowledge and expertise in the reinforcing steel industry.
  • Our reputation and past performance.

Q: What advice can you give a company that is trying to grow or just started? 

A: Hire a good, conservative accountant/controller that specializes in construction.
