LAX Economy Parking Structure Wins International Parking & Mobility Institute Award

The LAX Economy Parking Structure was recognized by the International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI) with an Award of Merit in Stand Alone Parking Facility Design, placing it among the industry’s top programs. IPMI Awards of Excellence showcase outstanding parking and transportation facilities and innovative programs to further the parking, transportation, and mobility industry. Entries are reviewed by a panel of expert judges from every segment of the parking, mobility, and transportation industry and ranked across a wide spectrum of criteria.

“The right delivery method—a progressive design-build—fostered an environment for collaboration and true partnership with LAWA and our design partners Watry Design and Gensler,” said Dave Callis during the grand opening ceremony.

The project was design-built in partnership with Watry Design and Gensler and provides approximately 4,300 parking stalls. A number of features and amenities designed to enhance the guest experience have been incorporated, such as a Meet and Greet space, public restrooms, vending machines, pet relief area, and a water bottle filling station. Special attention was given to vehicular circulation with pick-up and drop-off areas within the facility. A parking guidance system featuring the latest smart parking technology aids users in finding an open space. Sustainable features include EV charging stations, drought-tolerant landscaping, energy-saving LED light controls, and reserved parking for low emitting and carpool vehicles.

“Our success would not have been possible had it not been for the progressive design-build delivery model,” said Jeffrey Goodermote, Director of Parking Structures at Swinerton.  “This model was integral to facilitating significant programming changes late in design. Close collaboration and exhaustive teamwork between LAWA, Swinerton, Watry Design, and Gensler resulted in the addition of several amenities and features to improve the user experience that were not part of the initial design. This included a meet-and-greet area, escalators, expanded lightwells, and enhanced pedestrian pathways.”

Award recipients will be honored in-person at the 2022 IPMI Parking & Mobility Conference & Expo, July 24-27 in New Orleans, LA.
