Portland team delivers for Fiserv

In May 2018, Swinerton’s Portland office was contracted by Fortune 500 financial technology company Fiserv to build-out a new 65,000-square-foot office space in Beaverton, Oregon. The project team took control of the existing tilt-up concrete and wood frame structure originally constructed in the 1970’s and set out to renovate the space for Fiserv employees moving from Hillsboro & Portland offices.

Fiserv is based out of Brookfield, Wisconsin with offices scattered across the globe and throughout the United States. In order to retain talent and keep up with competitors, Fiserv is currently updating or consolidating staff within similar metropolitan areas. The Portland office was proud and excited to land this project and delivering a high-quality product as this may open opportunities for projects in other divisions in the near future.

The design focused heavily on integrating wood, and drywall reveals and edges creating ‘picture frames’ around key rooms and areas. We employed the skills of elite framers and finishers who really made each surface pop. The wood accent wall and reception desk in the entry lobby provide a visually striking and welcoming feature that characterizes the design aesthetic of the whole project. Existing structural wood beams in the lobby were wrapped with red cedar to form a ‘faux beam’ complete with fake structural steel buckets. When walking in the front door for the first time, customers often voice their fascination, this first impression follows them throughout their tour.

Fiserv placed an emphasis on making sure employees are comfortable in their open office environment while still providing spaces for focus and privacy. Team huddle and small focus rooms are spread throughout the building. Since opening, these rooms have been utilized by the staff daily and initial feedback is very positive.

The design also included some flair for the meeting and gathering spaces. Large conference and client presentation rooms are accented with dark stained oak panels and 3D sheet tiles on the walls. Accordion style operable partitions can turn one room into four making these spaces capable of accommodating the needs of the company for any size meeting. These rooms will be shown off to Fiserv’s clients in person and via webcam conference.

Set on a tight four-month schedule, it took great communication and many coordination meetings to make the project run smoothly, but the team stuck to Swinerton’s core values and brought the job to a spectacular on-time finish.
