Swinerton Management & Consulting was selected to provide Comprehensive Project and Construction Management Services for the Science Garage which is part of Futurelab, a successful public-private partnership between Genentech and South San Francisco Unified School District designed to build STEM competence and confidence for elementary through high school students in Genentech’s South San Francisco back yard.

The work included but was not limited to oversight of the design and management of the construction of the new Science Garage for South San Francisco High School, located at 400 B Street, South San Francisco, CA  94080. The new construction consisted of approximately 6,900 square feet of space on a single floor and includes a classroom with a teaching wall connected to the wet lab separated by a roll-up door to allow different classes to attend the Science Garage concurrently.  Also included in this new science building:  BioManufacturing and Plant Tissue Lab to grow and provide in-depth plant examination, An Independent Study Area for students excelling in their studies, Staining Room for preparing samples for study, and Chemical and Glass Storage separate from the Classroom and Wet/Dry Lab Areas.

The Science Garage was constructed on the South end of South San Francisco High School Campus next to the school’s general assembly building and a new modular classroom.  As part of the construction of the Science Garage, Swinerton identified and assisted in resolving an existing low flow issue with the campus’s fire hydrant and sprinkler system sitewide and obtained final occupancy approval from South San Francisco’s Fire Marshal. Swinerton and XL also identified a leaking fire hydrant line at the new modular classroom and repaired the line as part of this project.
