Swinerton provided design-build general contracting services for renovations to the entire landside portion of Long Beach International Airport (LGB). The airport has historically taken full advantage of Southern California’s mild climate, housing many of its functions in covered, open-air pavilions.

The project continued this tradition with a new ticketing building; a new Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) facility; new baggage claim systems; new pre-security concession spaces; a new public meet and greet plaza; restroom renovations; new rental car transaction counters; a new rental car parking lot; ground transportation facility improvements; and roadway and signage improvements. Structural work consisted of a seismic retrofit and restoration of the historic terminal, which was originally built in 1941.

Construction took place in both secure and non-secure venues. New construction was set adjacent to the operational terminal facility and required extensive investigation of existing buildings and systems. As part of this scope, Swinerton hired a subcontractor to perform underground utility mapping to discover unforeseen conditions prior to construction.

Close coordination was critical with Landside and Airside Operations from the beginning of the design-build process through the end of construction. The coordination process reduced security concerns, minimized interruptions, and allowed for continuity of building services.
