Certified LEED Gold, the 100,000-square-foot, cast-in-place concrete classroom and office building has three stories above-grade and 1 below-grade. The exterior consists of exposed cast-in-place concrete, unitized glazed aluminum curtain wall, and composite resin panels. Located on the UCSD main campus within the School of Medicine, it incorporates state-of-the-art design and technology to train medical students in the latest advances of medical and surgical technology. The Medical Education and Telemedicine Center combines and expands programs previously scattered around the La Jolla campus and at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. It includes a simulated hospital in the lower level with simulated operating rooms, exam rooms, emergency rooms, and microsurgical lab space. The 6,800-square-foot medical and surgical procedures teaching laboratory contains 22 stations where students are instructed in the latest techniques of surgical, robotic, endoscopic, and other special techniques. It also features a 350-capacity, three story auditorium space on the ground level along with a restaurant and outdoor courtyard/gathering space for the staff/faculty and students. Upper levels include conference rooms, office space and teaching stations, all with state of the art audio visual and media services. Ground level site work incorporates high end decorative concrete and landscaping features. Project scope also includes the extension of the campus central plant utility structures (chilled water and high temp hot water lines) as well as a 12Kv electrical duct within a public street.
