After determining that Gresham Smith outgrew its existing space in Uptown, the decision was made to relocate to the Legacy Union building. With about 50 local employees and plans to grow, Gresham Smith’s office needed to accommodate up to 90 professionals.  The design incorporated the new hybrid remote/in-person lifestyle that the firm’s professionals have become accustomed to over the past few years since the pandemic. The space features three different neighborhoods named after Charlotte parks with “quiet,” “traditional” and “active” zones that enable effective, focused work when needed and allow for engaged teamwork when preferred. The project totaled $3.0 million dollars and was delivered through the Construction Manager at Risk method. The scope of work included an extensive preconstruction process followed by several months of construction. The environment is rich with amenities including a work café and wellness rooms. Key design features add sophistication with unique ceiling details, custom industrial lighting and an experiential brand package integrated throughout the space. A living wall designed in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte adds a biophilic element with plants whose roots are integrated into the HVAC system to filter and clean the air.
