Swinerton provided general contracting services for the construction of a new two-story, 98,000-square-foot research and development building. The structure utilizes more than 600 tons of structural steel and contains highly specialized spaces that bring Hach’s instruments from conception through distribution. A subsidiary of Danaher Corporation, Hach designs, tests, manufactures, and distributes analytical testing instruments for investigating the quality and composition of liquids. Beckman, another subsidiary of Danaher, occupies part of this new building, but is isolated from Hach’s space due to Beckman’s accreditation from the United States Government.

The facility houses wet and dry laboratories, chemistry testing areas, 12 “obeya” spaces, 3D printing rooms, a model shop, an explosion-proof room, and a $10-million anechoic chamber. Obeyas are cross-functional spaces that include open areas for team collaboration, huddle and quiet areas for designing and creating products, and a build space for product building and experimenting.
