Women in Construction Week 2024

Breaking Barriers and Building The Future:

Celebrating women in construction

As we commemorate Women’s History Month this March, it’s important to recognize the invaluable contributions of women in the construction industry. Far from being confined by stereotypes, women are making significant strides in reshaping the construction landscape and fostering innovation.

Despite historical barriers, the number of women seeking careers in construction has soared in recent years. In 2023, women represented 10.3% of the construction workforce, marking a significant increase since 2016. However, women still only account for one in every 100 workers in the field, highlighting the need for continued efforts to increase diversity and draw women to construction careers.

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in minority women joining the construction industry, marking a significant step towards greater diversity and inclusivity within the field. Their presence enriches the industry with diverse perspectives and experiences and is a powerful example of empowerment and opportunity for future generations. As more minority women enter the construction workforce, they contribute to a more vibrant and dynamic industry, driving innovation and fostering a culture of equality and inclusion.

Recognizing the importance of diversity and addressing the worker shortage, the U.S. Department of Labor allocated $5 million in April 2023 to encourage and support women in apprenticeship programs. Swinerton has been proactive in supporting the growth of women within its workforce and supporting the next generation. With 15.5% of our employee population being women, Swinerton is ahead of the national average, demonstrating our commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing career opportunities for women.

Our Women’s Business Resource Group (WBRG) is crucial in facilitating inclusive, supportive, and accessible career opportunities for women. Through various activities and conversations with peers, the WBRG creates an environment where women can thrive and grow within the organization.

Swinerton is dedicated to developing the industry’s future by sponsoring and supporting organizations aligned with its vision. These organizations include SkillsUSA, which provides skilled trade learning opportunities to high school-aged individuals, and local chapters of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) throughout the U.S., which brings women together across the architectural, engineering, and construction industries.

Each year, we celebrate women who are making a significant impact within the firm and the industry. These leaders are not only breaking glass ceilings but also fostering innovation and mentoring the next generation of women in construction.

As we celebrate Women in Construction, let us acknowledge women’s vital role in shaping the industry’s future. Through support, mentorship, and continued advocacy for diversity and inclusion, we can build a construction industry that truly reflects the talent and potential of all individuals, regardless of gender.
