Every day, on every job, we live out our motto: Make Safety a Habit, Your Family Needs You. A safe jobsite motivates our workers, saves on project costs, and prevents delays—all of which improve quality and productivity.
A far-reaching culture of safety is central to Swinerton’s mission to operate and manage safe, healthy, and respectful jobsites. We perform foundational training for every employee-owner and partner, maintain active involvement from a highly certified team of safety professionals on every project, prevent and plan across all stages of construction, and empower every individual with Stop Work Authority to raise awareness of and prevent any unsafe situation on a jobsite.
At its core, Swinerton’s Safety Program is about creating a true safety mindset for our workers and trade partners. Rather than merely complying with regulations, our teams embrace the reason behind them: sending every person home safely, every day.
Foundational Safety Principles
A successful project is a safe, healthy, and respectful project with a focus on zero incidents. To achieve this, Swinerton’s Safety Program hinges on five core principles supported by robust processes and techniques that minimize risk for everyone in the field:
- Focus on the Fundamentals: No matter the complexity of the work, the most effective elements of safety are always implemented and front-of-mind.
- Expert Support: One of the most highly credentialed Safety Departments in the industry with expertise across trades and markets.
- True Partnership: A culture of trust and partnership with our trade partners means we work together for everyone’s success and safety.
- Continuous Improvement: A mindset of continuous improvement means that complacency is never an option.
- Safety for All: A commitment to the safety of every person associated with a job site—including workers, partners, and neighbors—contributes to our mission of a zero-incident project.
Dedicated Safety Professionals
Swinerton boasts one of the most highly credentialed safety departments in the industry—with over 50 credentialed safety professionals and counting.
All Swinerton’s projects are supported by experts who are trained and certified in the safest and most effective work practices, and whose diverse backgrounds in concrete, drywall, cranes, and industrial hygiene add to the strength of our collective team. We invest in them for the greater safety of every job we undertake.
In addition to our dedicated safety professionals, Swinerton requires that each superintendent complete the OSHA 30-hour training prior to job assignment. Additionally, most Swinerton superintendents have also obtained the Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
The project management team also plays a key role in maintaining a safe jobsite. All project engineers and project managers are required to complete a minimum of the OSHA 10-hour training, though many have chosen to exceed this.
Where additional skill or technical knowledge is required for health and environmental matters, our in-house Certified Industrial Hygienist supports project teams with pre-planning of projects and helps provide appropriate mitigation guidance when hazardous materials are encountered on the project. This expertise increases the health and safety of everyone associated with the project, lowers insurance premiums, and adds value without having to bring in an outside consultant or specialist.
