Long Beach Airport Celebrates Opening of a New Consolidated Baggage Claim

The Long Beach Airport (LGB) has opened its new Baggage Claim facility, completing the second phase of its Terminal Area Improvement Program. The $25 million investment was designed by Corgan and constructed by Swinerton, consolidating the airport’s baggage claim operations into one open-air, pavilion-style building. The new Baggage Claim features two state-of-the-art carousels, terrazzo flooring, four digital displays, and a future freestanding tensile shade structure.

“Swinerton feels honored to be a part of the amazing transformation of this facility. We look forward to continuing work to further our long history of mutual success,” said Swinerton Operations Manager Jose Acosta.

The new facility is adjacent to the passenger concourse and offers an improved experience for passengers with quicker and easier access to their checked items. The project was funded by Airport revenue, bond proceeds, and Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs). Long Beach Airport is a self-supporting enterprise of the City of Long Beach and does not receive local tax dollars.

The old Baggage Claim area will be demolished to make way for a new Baggage Service Office and concessions set to open in 2024. The City of Long Beach will release an RFP later this year to solicit ideas for concessions and vending machines, as well as other potential uses for available space at the airport.
