Swinerton completed the Queen Emma Apartments adaptive reuse project located in downtown Honolulu, HI, at the historic and now revitalized Queen Emma Building. Originally built in the 1960s, this local landmark served as an office building. After sitting vacant for over 15 years, it will once again continue to serve an important role in our community as contemporary affordable housing. Totaling 68 units, these newly constructed studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments offer modernized layouts and include an assortment of fantastic amenities. Conveniently located just minutes from the capitol, Chinatown, and Arts districts, it’s easy to embrace everything Honolulu has to offer.

Affordable housing has been deemed a crisis in Honolulu, which needs 64,700 new housing units to meet demand by 2025. And demand is apparent—within one week of the Queen Emma apartments being listed for rent, over 60 applications per unit were received. This is the third affordable housing project the Hawaii group has completed in the past three years.
